How to make drinks look ‘refreshing’ in videos (Part 1)

It’s a roasting hot summer's day, and you come across a beer ad in your newsfeed as you scroll through social media. The bottle looks ice cold like it just came out of the fridge, and the evaporation is dripping off the bottleneck. Suddenly, you feel yourself taking a gulp and at that moment, all you want is to drink that beer or at least an ice-cold drink!

Why invest in making your product look good on video?

We’ve all seen it in TV ads, billboards and videos, a food or drink product looking its best, in an enticing setting. In reality, almost no one looks at a tepid beer and thinks ‘Yep, I want that!’.

The reason why companies invest in these adverts is to make the product look enticing and desirable. That’s why chilled drinks will tend to look refreshing, cold and ultimately, too good NOT to drink. Food will look delicious, bright and mouth-watering. The result -  people will be much more likely to buy.

How to achieve the refreshing look

There are ways to make your products look cold and fresh without having to leave it in the fridge. Luckily, it’s relatively easy to achieve this refreshing look on your beverages with a few tips and tricks.

The three things you’ll need are:

  1. Water spray bottle or a travel spray bottle (available from Boots or pharmacies)

  2. Water (available nationwide from your local tap!)

A bottle of glycerine (optional). This is a vegetable extract used in cosmetic products. (available on Amazon

How glycerine can help your product videos

The glycerine is optional but is recommended as it helps to avoid making a mess on your worktops. I can’t tell you the science behind it but glycerine makes the liquid stick to anything you are spraying it on. Spray it once and it will stay there while you get your shots.

Fine mist goes a long way

The trick is to find a spray bottle that produces a fine mist. We don’t want the product to look like it’s been left outside in the rain (especially in Scotland!). Instead, it should look like it has just been taken out of the fridge - the condensation look is what we are after to make it look chilled and refreshing.

Applying the ‘refreshing’ look to your products

  1. Apply glycerin to the product evenly with a papertowel (or where you will be spraying)

  2. Give the product a few sprays with your water spray bottle. Be sure to keep moving across the product to make the condensation look even and not just focused on one area.

  3. Start filming your product to test out the shots on your camera
